For the Second Congressional District CU Regent race, our pick is Edie Hooton.

Much like the county treasurer position, it still occasionally boggles the mind that the CU Regents are a political entity. Not many universities have elected regents and not many such boards are so partisan. In an ideal world, the CU Regents would be an apolitical body dedicated to the stewardship of our flagship university. But in this world, we still need good leaders, no matter their political stripes.

Edie Hooton, a former state representative for Boulder’s House District 10, is inarguably the most experienced candidate on the ballot. In a time when higher education is under attack and academic freedom is on the line, Hooton is best positioned to keep CU thriving and make it a more resilient institution for the future.

Her connections at the state Capitol and her understanding of the mechanisms of policy, funding and complex budgets mean she has the practical knowledge of how to fight on CU’s behalf. She is also clear-eyed about what issues are facing the university, from affordability to graduation rates to the upheaval in college sports, and has cogent ideas about how to address each. Simply put, her time in the Capitol has given her the connection and knowledge to help lead CU.

Again, though, both the other two candidates, Kubs Lalchandani and Murray Smith, would be excellent picks.

Lalchandani brings a wealth of experience leading in the technology sector, which could provide valuable insight on AI as the university seeks to adapt to these changing times. He would also bring much-needed diversity to the board. As the CU student body continues to diversify, the leadership should keep up.

Smith also has a strong platform: He is the only candidate who actually attended CU. Also, as the youngest candidate, he would bring the very practical knowledge of what it’s like to be a student today.

While Hooton is our pick, we hope to see Lalchandani and Smith continue seeking out opportunities to lead. Our community needs their voices, too.
